Returning from Medical Leave

Returning from medical leave can bring a range of emotions. OSSA and the Spartan community are here to support students as they return back to MSU. Some students are required to demonstrate readiness to return before re-enrolling.

How does a student know if they need to demonstrate readiness to return?

A student is required to complete this process if:

  • Their medical leave decision letter states additional readiness documentation is required before enrolling.
  • There is a medical leave and return hold on the student’s account.

Please note that students seeking re-enrollment after being recessed or dismissed and do not have an approved medical leave on file should consult their college contact and follow appeal instructions or the readmission procedure.

Steps to Return to MSU

  1. Students should work with their provider to discuss follow-up care and develop a plan for re-enrollment. When both the student and provider agree the student is cleared to return, students can begin this process. 
  2. Complete the Readiness to Return Assessment. This document contains two parts. Part one should be completed by the student and part two by the licensed treatment provider. 
    1. The provider must return the completed assessment directly to the student. Documentation should not be sent directly to OSSA. 
  3. Upload the Readiness to Return assessment into the Returning from Medical Leave form. 
  4. Monitor email for a confirmation of the request and next steps. Most requests not requiring additional information receive a decision with 10 business days.

Deadlines

The deadlines for applying to return are: 

  • April 1 for students re-enrolling for summer term
  • June 1 for students re-enrolling for fall term AND have interest in on-campus housing
  • Aug. 1 for students re-enrolling for fall term and do not have interest in on-campus housing
  • Dec. 1 for students who re-enrolling for Spring term

If a student receives a decision requiring they demonstrate readiness after the date for the following term has passed, the student must wait to re-enroll for the subsequent term.
